REFLEXOLOGY..... A form of bodywork that focuses primarily on the feet.
Written by Holli Magill, Massage Therapist at Be Well
Let's Explain....
It is a scientific art based on the premise that there are reflex points on the feet that correspond to the internal organs and structure of the body. The physical act of applying specific pressures, using thumb techniques, results in stress reduction which causes a physiological change in the body. A reflexology session consists of an aromatherapy sea salt foot bath, a reflexology session, and a foot massage. It is generally about a 50 minute session.Promoting relaxation, improved circulation, reduction in pain, soothes tired feet, and encourages overall healing. It's non- invasive and can be used for people of all ages.
Let's Talk History.
Reflexology dates back more than 4000 years to the ancient time of the Egyptians. This wall painting is dated approximately 2,330 B.C. early 6th Dynasty. It depicts the practice of hand and foot reflexology in the tomb of Ankhmahor (highest official after the Pharaoh) at Saqqara, known as the physicians' tomb. Dr. William H. Fitzgerald was a nose and throat specialist and is currently hailed as the "Re-discoverer of Reflexology". In 1913 he discovered that pressure, when applied to certain points on the body relieves pain and improves the functions of certain organs. He used the name "Zone Therapy" and Reflexology was known by that name until the early 1960's.
Eunice Ingham, is known as the "Mother of Reflexology". She initially worked with Dr. Fitzgerald as a physical therapist, also practiced Zone Therapy and helped develop it. She is responsible to reflexology as we know it today.
